Forensic Services: Data Recovery
By default, we forget things. Historically, to
avoid this problem, people have used paper in one
form or another, writing whatever notes are needed
to be able to avoid forgetting anything. The bad
news is that paper is easy to shred, can be lost,
and consumed by fire. Paper can help us to
remember, but data on paper are data easily
forgotten.
With the move to electronic data, we have learned
that an interesting shift has taken place. Where it
used to be difficult to remember things, it's now
difficult to forget. Sure, you can erase the file,
but copying electrons is almost free—how many
other copies exist? How many backup copies are made
automatically by the application or operating system
in use? Even if all copies are deleted, are the
data really gone? If you need to retrieve data from
a particular form of media, how will you find
someone who can read it?
Interhack understands computer systems and the data
they hold. When you thought the data you needed
were gone, checking with us just might turn up some
surprisingly pleasant results.
